SUMMARY:IEEE Green Technologies Conference
DESCRIPTION:Following the IEEE Green Technology Conference\, IEEE Region 5
will host its annual business meeting and student competitions. Throughout
Region 5 IEEE Student Branches are invited to participate in one of the m
any student competitions supported by the region members. The Region 5 Stu
dent Paper Contest provides an opportunity for students to submit technica
l research papers for peer review and publishing. The student ethics conte
st will challenge the students and help them understand the boundaries of
ethics in the electro-technical profession. Student teams participating in
the student design contest will have the opportunity to exercise their in
tellectual prowess to design a solution to a realistic problem presented t
o them at the beginning of the day. The student teams who have been workin
g to develop robots will meet head-to-head in friendly rivalry at the robo
tics competition. The Louisiana State University student branch will also
host a Student Professional Awareness Conference.\nMore info: ieeegreentec

SUMMARY:Offshore Wind: Canada
DESCRIPTION:Europe set a new offshore wind development and investment recor
d in 2010\, with over 50 percent market growth. Within the next five year
s\, 11 GW of new offshore capacity will be built in Europe. While Europe
has been the hot spot for offshore development\, North America is finally
embracing the potential of this renewable energy giant. Accelerating the
deployment of offshore wind will have tremendous economic and environme
ntal benefits for both Canada and the United States. There are\, however\
, a host of challenges to overcome if we are to fully realize offshore wi

SUMMARY:Marine Renewable & Offshore Wind Energy conference
DESCRIPTION:Marine and offshore energy offers the potential to meet a small
but significant share of the world's renewable energy aspirations. Howeve
r\, the maritime environment also provides many challenges in terms of eco
nomics\, survivability and reliability of such systems. Offshore wind ener
gy had made the most rapid progress and is now starting to move into large
scale commercial developments. Wave energy developments have only seen sp
oradic progress since the 1970's. Tidal and current stream technologies\,
which began serious development in the 1990's\, are now at the prototype a
nd small scale commercial development stage.\nMore info: rina

SUMMARY:Conference on Wind energy and Wildlife impacts
DESCRIPTION:Conference on Wind energy and Wildlife impacts May 2-5 2011\, T
rondheim\, Norway\n\nEnergy from renewable sources has become increasingly
important as part of energy policies\, partly due to climate change scena
rios. With the present targets for renewable energy production in many coun
tries\, and the huge world potential for windpower generation\, wind-power
development has become a very important issue from a political\, economic
al and ecological point of view. Ecological impacts of wind-power generati
on are debated intensively within several fora\, and there is a need for a
firm knowledge-base on the impacts on wildlife\, as well as innovative an
d efficient mitigation measures.\n\nNorway has long been been a net export
er of renewable energy from hydropower\, and is in the forefront of wind e
nergy development. 2010 is the last year of a major research programme on
wildlife and wind-power generation in Norway. The programme has focussed o
n research tools and methodological development\, as well as population ef
fects on wildlife (particularly the white-tailed eagle). Much work is in p
rogress on these issues worldwide\, and in 2011 we intend to gather collea
gues from all over the world to share experiences on how wind-power plants
may affect wildlife\, and discuss how we should meet the challenges creat
ed by the world-wide increased activity in large scale wind-power plant co
 nstruction.\nMore info: cww2011

SUMMARY:Submarine Power Cable Interconnection Forum
DESCRIPTION:There are a number of submarine cable routes being planned and
under construction throughout Europe\; these are built in the interest of
trade and for the integration of renewable energy into the European grid.\
n\nCables are a huge investment\; both of time and money\, and any challen
ges arising could result in operational and financial losses. The planning
of these routes is essential as topography\, existing cables and fishing
areas must be considered. While the legislation governing the transfer of
energy has been relaxed there are other legal obstacles regarding the phys
ical laying of a submarine cable. Permits must be obtained from the intere
sted countries however\, this can prove difficult as the involvement of mo
re than one country and international waters can mean that there is no sin
gle set of requirements.\n\nThis exclusive marcus evans event will allow e
lectricity players to get an understanding of how to overcome the challeng
es thrown up by the laying of submarine cables.\nMore info: marcusevans

SUMMARY:Virginia Offshore Wind Conference 2011
DESCRIPTION:With Federal government commitments to fast-tracking the proce
ss and partnerships launched between one of the world's largest wind turb
ine manufacturers (Gamesa) and largest ship-builders (Northrop Grumman)\,
Virginia is well on its way to becoming the East Coast capital for wind
energy. With plentiful offshore winds\, a deep water port and a skilled
and experienced labor force supporting the potential creation of over 10\
,000 jobs\, the opportunity is ripe for Virginia if it plays its cards ri
ght.\nThe Virginia Offshore Wind Conference features over 60 panelists ul
timately tasked with fleshing out the barriers and issues involved with d
eveloping the Commonwealth's offshore wind resources. This "working" conf
erence will also provide opportunities for industry leaders\, stakeholder
s and policy-makers to meet face-to-face and together craft action plans
for getting steel in the ground ASAP.\nMore info: vawind2011

SUMMARY:Wind Turbine Rotor Blades
DESCRIPTION:Rotor blades are the core of wind turbines. They determine the
maximum harvest of wind energy. Their full functionality and security agai
nst fatigue and degradation has to be designed and assured for a service l
ife of at least twenty years. Meanwhile\, keeping pace with the rapid deve
lopment of the market\, rotor blade size is steadily increasing particular
ly for off-shore operations. In order to meet the requirements within the
framework of design\, development and construction of rotor blades\, a com
prehensive knowledge of the specific essentials\, e.g. of the outer and in
ner stresses and strains\, computing and evaluation methods\, and material
capability and performance characteristics is necessary. Durable construc
tion and optimised production technologies\, therefore\, are necessary pre
requisites for long service intervals\, just as new and yet to be develope
d structural health monitoring systems (SHM) are. Experience shows that qu
ite a lot of damage can still occur to existing rotor blades and that a lo
t of problems in this area are not solved yet. Also\, the solution to the
problem of disposal is still in its infancy.\nMore info: my-windenergy

SUMMARY:Offshore Foundations for Wind Turbines
DESCRIPTION:European Offshore wind power showed a record growth of 51% in 2
010 and is currently seen as the most promising source of renewable energy
to achieve political targets. The costs of energy from offshore wind farm
s however are at present significantly higher than onshore wind. The econo
mic feasibility of offshore wind farms depends on a number of technical is
sues. A significant contributor to this higher cost is the turbine foundat
ion. In order to satisfy these requirements a number of possible designs a
nd concepts are currently on the market. Thorough evaluation in terms of c
osts\, capacity\, installation time\, site conditions and turbine requirem
 ents are crucial.\nMore info: iqpc
