SUMMARY:Marine energy resources: opportunities and challenges
DESCRIPTION:The presentation will review the current opportunities for deve
 loping marine renewable energy particularly around the Welsh coast and the
  south-west of England.\n\nThe various key alternative and complementary o
 ptions will be reviewed including tidal stream turbines\, impoundments and
  barrages. In particular\, emphasis will focus on assessing the potential 
 hydro-environmental impact of the various schemes on the hydrodynamics and
  water quality in the Severn Estuary\, Bristol Channel and the North Wales
  coast.\n\nAn outline will be given of recent research undertaken at Cardi
 ff University on changes in the hydrodynamic and water quality processes f
 or some of the schemes\, together with a new design for the Severn barrage
 \, which addresses many of the key hydro-environmental concerns highlighte
